Two Powerful Formative Assessment Apps for Teachers - Kang Khoe

Formative assessment is an ongoing form of evaluation that teachers conduct concurrently with students learning in class with the explicit goal of assessing students comprehension, gauging their learning needs and designing teaching materials accordingly.  Teachers use a wide variety of techniques to formatively assess students learning which we have covered here in a previous post. There are also a number of excellent educational web tools and mobile apps designed specifically  for formative assessment purposes. In today’s post we are sharing with you two practical iPad apps you can us with students to assess their learning needs and collect informative feedback to inform your teaching methodology. 1- Verso


Verso is a very good formative assessment app teachers can use to gather students feedback and personalize learning. Some of the interesting features it provides to teachers include: ‘Easily create rich media activities using any Internet resource or by simply recording straight through the Verso app; send challenges to your class instantly with a single click; student discussion and in-app formative data let you easily identify and respond to individual learning needs; group your students based on their responses, export student conversations as evidence of learning; and mmediate visibility on student engagement lets you reflect and refine your own practice’. Verso also provides students with the necessary tools to share their voice, engage in peer learning with other classmates, share anonymous reflections on their learning and many more.

2- Recap


This is another great formative assessment app teachers can use with their students in class. It’s basically a video response app that enables teachers and parents to track students learning. ‘It prompts students to respond to in-app assignments on video and stores responses privately in the cloud, giving students, teachers and parents easy access to deep learning insights. Thanks to student Recap responses, teachers get a closer look at students’ individual performance as well as an overview of how each class is doing as a group…Recap also serves as a platform for student ePortfolios, which helps students assess their own performance and track progress over time.
